Here at Southern Cal Kennels we have years of experience breeding show quality Golden Retrievers.

We have produced several of our own champions and all of our dogs come from champion bloodlines. Recently (staring in Mid 2004), we introduced Goldendoodles into our breeding program and have gotten great results, even though it took 5 years of people begging us to breed them, all the while us saying NO WAY. When we finally did it, we were so very pleased with the outcome. Like most every other pure bred dog breeder, we "thought" the idea of mixing breeds was ludicrous, but thank goodness we didn't stay that closed minded forever! Our Goldendoodles are wonderful, smart, loving and happy dogs. We are now looking forward to multi-generation breeding. This will take time and careful planning. But we are on track and excited about the future of our Doodles!

At Southern Cal Kennels, our home is our kennel, and we have turned our home into a home for the dogs! We live in Palmdale California (LA County), on three acres of all usable land and we have a huge swimming pool, for people and dogs! The dogs also have their own plastic baby pools in the summer and misters in all the dog runs. We built a huge whelping room (25 x 36) for puppies and their mother's. The whelping room is insulated better than our main house and it's air conditioned in the summer and heated in the winter. This is where we whelp and raise our puppies until they are old enough to come out side into the back yard. Whelping and raising the puppies indoors keeps our precious newborns out of harms way and free from disease or other airborne "issues". So our puppies are kept inside until it is safe for them to be in an outside environment. This also coincides thankfully with the fact that they will eventually get too big to be indoors in a confined space! And, it lends itself to keeping and active litter of puppies living area clean!

When our puppies are old enough to come out side of the whelping room, they are then raised in our back yard with their mother's. They are right next to our bedroom window, where we can keep a close eye on them when we are inside the house. The back yard has specially designed safe areas for the puppies, away from the fenced off swimming pool, each having their own igloo doghouses, with trees, grass, and cement that is sanitized daily. The back yard is a separate area away from the adult kennel and exercise area. At night we bring the pups back into the whelping room and put them to bed in dog crates, this gets them started on crate training! Then at 6:00 am they come back out into the back yard again to go potty, eat breakfast, and start a new day! Unless of course if it's raining, then they can stay inside the whelping room in a large exercise pen on cedar shavings or news papers.

Our adult dogs (besides the mother's of the puppies) and boarding dogs, sleep in large (16x15) covered runs at night. There are never more than 2 dogs per run, each dog having their own igloo doghouse, and the runs are sanitized daily. During the day we have an acre dedicated for them that they can run and play in.

We have 4 children, ages 7, 9, 15 and 18, the 7 and 9 year old are in the back yard every day playing with the puppies. The rest of our menagerie includes 2 cats that love our puppies and socialize with them, a green wing macaw and an umbrella cockatoo! We live in a ranch area, where everyone has animals; horses, goats, geese, chickens, donkeys, sheep, cows, and ducks - it's a great place to live! We have 4H clubs all over our town. We also utilize guardian homes. Our guardians raise puppies in their own homes, so another loving family might be raising some of the puppies you may see on our web site. The families raising these puppies raise them "inside" of their homes and give them just as much love, care, and socialization, as we do.

Our dogs are well socialized and get to do lots of fun things. We take them camping and swimming and out to the dessert with us when we go to Dew Mont Dunes or Dove Springs in the winter. In the summer we take them to Lake Havasu and believe you me, they have a blast! We also alternate dogs each time we go any where, to make sure they all get to have fun!

Anyone who has met our dogs can tell you that they are raised with love, you can tell by their friendly loving nature. We are home all day outside with the dogs, cleaning, grooming, and playing ball for exercise! And when we go out of town we have a full time in home pet sitter.

We take great pride in the way we raise our puppies and care for our dogs, that's why we have a grade A from animal control. We welcome SURPRISE visits from animal control as they do not tell us when they're coming to inspect us, we always pass with flying colors, far surpassing their expectations! On our references and testimonials page you can also read our client's testimonials.

DID YOU KNOW

Southern Cal Kennels has a grade "A" from LA county animal control and the health and environmental services. Licensed kennels receive grades just like restaurants do. Just like you would never want to eat at a restaurant with a grade lower than an "A", you would never want to buy or board a dog from a kennel with any less of a grade either! We have our scorecard posted in the window right next to our front door, yes just like a restaurant! That is the law, and we are proud of our grade, it's the highest score possible!

Of course some breeders will make excuses for why they are not licensed; they are only private parties, or they are only hobby breeders and they only have one or maybe two litters a year. A hobby is collecting dolls, or trains, not selling dogs!

Did you know that California law states that even if you only have one litter a year, you must still have a litter permit from animal control. And if you are going to have more than one litter per year, then you must have an actual kennel license and not just a one-time litter permit.

Also anyone, breeder or private party, that owns more than 3 dogs must have a kennel license. Finally, you must also have a seller's permit (issued from the state board of equalization) to sell the puppies. The only time you wouldn't need a seller's permit, is if your dog became pregnant "by mistake" and this was really just a once in a "lifetime" occurrence! But if your going to sell more than one litter ever in your entire "lifetime", then you need a seller's permit! If a person sells puppies without having a seller's permit it's a misdemeanor to a felony! The only animals exempt from being sold with sales tax, are animals sold for food consumption, farm animals, not pets!

Southern Cal Kennels is a licensed kennel with a score of "A" and a seller's permit. We meet all the criteria of a REPUTABLE breeder!

But do not confuse a kennel license issued from our local animal control with a USDA license issued from the USDA, they are two different licenses. A USDA license is for large scale puppy mills, that sell puppies to pet stores and brokers. No one is allowed to sell a puppy to a pet store or to a broker without a USDA license, the same license they issue to farmers! That is why when a pet store claims they get their puppies from a local breeder, they are flat out deceiving the public, to find out more go to: www.nopuppymills.com

So as you can see by the breeder having a seller's permit and by charging sales tax, it shows the buyer that the breeder is paying taxes and abiding by the law! Isn't it disturbing to think of all the breeders out there that are selling puppies and are completely under the table. Figure a litter of 9 puppies at $1200 each = $10,800. And you know that some breeders have multiple litters at a time and are selling them for a lot more money than just $1200 a puppy. And here you are working hard and contributing back to society by paying your taxes, while they are making under the table money, just like all the illegal aliens. This is not meant to sound resentful, it is just meant to be an eye opener for you the hard working tax payer!

Please go to the "Choosing A Breeder & Puppy" page on our website for more information on selecting a responsible-reputable breeder!
